Human eyes have a clear lens which helps to focus light passing through the eye into a clear image on the retina. This is rather like the lens at the front of a camera, which helps to focus an image onto a camera’s film.

As the normal human eye ages or undergoes trauma / other illness, this clear lens becomes less flexible and cloudy, resulting in glare and blurry vision. Symptoms of glare may be more pronounced when the eye is exposed to bright lights, due to light scatter through the lens.

The process of removing the aging and cloudy cataract and replacing it with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is termed cataract surgery, and is the most common and successful elective day case surgical procedure performed in the United Kingdom, with over 200,000 performed per annum.

Cataract surgery with intraocular lens replacement is often suitable for patients who have lost the normal range of vision and those with reduced vision quality due cloudiness of the crystalline lens.

Your surgeon will carefully review your eyes and help you decide which treatment lens options are best suited to you. The recovery is usually 1 week for each eye and both can be treated a week apart or in some cases simultaneously.
