Presbymax Laser Treatment

As the human eye ages, its lens loses flexibility which leads to the natural range of vision diminishing. This is termed “presbyopia” and results in loss of near vision (e.g. computers, mobile phones and menus appearing blurry) unless reading glasses are used.

PresbyMAX laser eye surgery on the cutting-edge Amaris Schwind 1050rs excimer laser, owned by St Paul’s, is a treatment for presbyopia. The treatment creates a multifocal profile within the cornea which splits light to create simultaneous images within the eye for near, intermediate and distance vision. The brain subsequently selects the most beneficial image to restore range of vision.

PresbyMAX may be an alternative to intraocular Multifocal Lens surgery in suitable patients. It does not involve touching the human lens, as reshaping occurs under a thin LASIK flap on the cornea (the front surface of the eye).

PresbyMAX eye surgery can simultaneously be used to correct other errors such as Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism where they occur. PresbyMAX can also benefit patients who have previously undergone cataract surgery with a monofocal lens and would like to increase their depth of vision. The recovery is usually 2-3 days for each eye and both can be treated simultaneously.

Both treatments are for the management for presbyopia and sometimes termed presbyLASIK procedures. The treatments differ in the profiles created and the spread of vision between the dominant and non-dominant eye. In addition to this the treatments differ in the degree of tissue removed by the laser, with PresbyMAX preserving more tissue.
