How LASEK eye surgery works
LASEK involves treating your prescription by reshaping the cornea under a thin flap of skin on the surface of the eye. It is an alternative to other forms of laser eye surgery. The recovery is usually 1 week for each eye and both can be treated simultaneously. Your 1st appointment, procedure and aftercare will be with one of our consultant ophthalmologists, both of whom have the relevant qualifications and extensive experience in this field.
Who is suitable for LASEK eye surgery?
Suitability criteria for LASEK is the same as those for PRK and LASIK. Please see “Am I suitable for Laser eye surgery section” to assess your possible suitability here.
Before your LASEK eye surgery
1. Welcome
You will be seen by your surgeon who will review your clinical measurements, examine you and answer any questions.
2. Drops
Local anaesthetic eye drops are instilled in the eyes to ensure total numbness and comfort throughout the procedure.
3. Treatment
A surgical clip keeps the eye open and the laser is orientated over the treatment area. A flap is created on the cornea and then displaced, at which point vision becomes blurry. Under this flap, laser reshaping will take place followed by the application of anti-scarring medication. After this, your surgeon will reposition the flap and apply a contact lens for comfort.
4. Aftercare
You will be supported to relax with your eyes closed. The consultant surgeon will examine your eye 20 to 30 minutes later.
5. Future
You will be given post-surgery drops and instructions. A follow-up appointment will be arranged.
